About the Program

The Sustainable Household Scheme offers zero-interest loans designed to assist with the expenses of energy-efficient upgrades in your home. 

 

If deemed eligible, you can secure a loan ranging from $2,000 to $15,000, with the flexibility to repay it over a maximum of 10 years.

 

How It Works

Eligible participants can access loans between $2,000 and $15,000 for a variety of energy-efficient products, including:

 

  • Rooftop solar panels
  • Household battery storage systems
  • Electric heating and cooling systems
  • Hot water heat pumps (HWHP)
  • stove tops Electric
  • Electric vehicles
  • Electric vehicle charging infrastructure
  • Ceiling insulation
  • Installation costs for these items

 

Throughout the duration of the scheme, you have the option to install one or multiple products from this list, collectively valued at up to $15,000.

 

Depending on your loan application and credit evaluation, it may be possible to borrow beyond the $15,000 limit, though interest will be applicable on any amount exceeding this cap.

 

Your loan repayments will kick off once:

  • The installed product or system is fully operational, or
  • You purchase an electric vehicle.

 

You can apply for a loan under this scheme alongside a subsidy from another program, such as the Home Energy Support Program.

Who Can Take Part

Households

This program is available to residents of the ACT who own a home or hold a current driving license (if applying for an electric vehicle loan).

 

To qualify, applicants must meet the scheme’s eligibility criteria (detailed in the Scheme Guidelines) and the lending criteria set by Bright. This includes attending a free, one-hour live workshop, which can be attended either online or in person. These workshops will guide you in making informed energy efficiency choices.

Rebates for Concession Card Holders

If you possess an eligible concession card, you might qualify for up to $5,000 in rebates through the Home Energy Support Program. These rebates can cover half of the costs associated with energy efficiency upgrades, including ceiling insulation, solar panel installation, and shifting from gas to efficient electric appliances. Furthermore, you can pair the rebate with a zero-interest loan of up to $10,000 through the Sustainable Household Scheme to alleviate upfront expenses.

 

Community Groups

Eligible community groups can access loans ranging from $2,000 to $15,000 for the purchase of energy-efficient products. 

 

Group eligibility requires meeting the Scheme’s criteria and Bright lending requirements, which include attending a free one-hour live workshop or participating in the Business Energy and Water program.

Cost

The program incurs no establishment fees or account-keeping charges.

 

You have the option to repay the loan early without incurring any penalties. However, if you miss a loan payment, the loan provider may impose a fee.

 

Applicants must adhere to standard credit criteria for the loan, which includes maintaining a solid credit history and demonstrating the ability to repay the loan without experiencing financial hardship. 

 

If repayment becomes challenging, the loan provider offers hardship support to assist you.

 

The loan provider is also committed to responsible lending practices as set out in the National Consumer Protection Credit Act 2009.

 

To lower the overall loan amount, holders of a Pensioner Concession Card, Department of Veterans’ Affairs Gold Card, and Health Care Card may be eligible for rebates on rooftop solar installations and other energy-efficient products through the Home Energy Support Program. Approved households for one or more Home Energy Support rebates could also receive up to $10,000 in a zero-interest loan.

 

This means that eligible households can access a total of $15,000 in support from the ACT Government, either through $15,000 in zero-interest loans alone or a combination of $10,000 in loans and $5,000 in rebates.
